The island has its own specialty pastas, cheese, meat, fish and delicious sweets. Also, for wine lovers, Sardinia produces wines, such as Vermentino whites and Cannonau reds. Visitors can taste wines and other Sardinian specialities in Agriturismi across the island. So, here are some things to try that are unique in this Italian region.

Su Porcheddu

A true dish of the Sardinian culinary tradition. Su Porcheddu or Porcetto is a roast suckling pig cooked on a spit for up to five hours. The result is tasty and crunchy pork. In short, a must-try food for anyone visiting Sardinia.

This fresh filled pasta is one of our favorite dishes in Sardinia. The Culurgiones are stuffed with a mix of potatoes, mint leaves, pecorino cheese and animal fats. Also, this pasta is served with a tomato sauce dressing.

Malloreddus

This typical Sardinian pasta made from semolina and saffron is shaped in its distinctive style. Also, this pasta is served with tomato sauce and meat. A good alternative to the superb Culurgiones!

Pane Carasau

You’ll find this very thin and light bread in every lunch and dinner. In fact, it’s very common to serve Pane Carasau with appetizers in Sardinia. Furthermore, try the Pane Guttiau, a very tasty variant of Carasau bread, enriched with extra virgin olive oil and salt.

Fregula

Sardinian fregula or fregola is a pasta that is not found in other Italian regions. This small pasta is made of balls of durum wheat semolina and water toasted in the oven. Due to its shape, it’s sometimes confused with North African couscous.

Pane Frattau

Ancient Sardinian recipe based on Carasau bread soaked in broth and stacked like tomato lasagna. Moreover, to complete the recipe, it’s placed on top of a poached egg.

Mirto

Sardinian myrtle is a typical liqueur of this Italian region and Corsica. It’s obtained by the alcoholic maceration of myrtle berries. In Sardinia, the use of myrtle berries for the preparation of liquor presumably dates back to 800.

Seada

It’s a delicious typical Sardinian dessert. The Seada or Sebada is a large fried semolina dumpling stuffed with pecorino cheese. This dessert is served with sugar or honey on top. In short, another must-try if you love sweets!

A good restaurant to eat local food on the island of La Maddalena, located a few steps from the central square. When you book your table ask if Porcetto is available. In fact it’s one of their best dishes, served with baked potatoes.

Gelateria Dolci Distrazioni (La Maddalena)

Perhaps one of the best ice creams in Sardinia located a few steps from the central square of La Maddalena. So, we tried a different ice cream flavor every night, but our favorite is Mirto.
